Rwanda is home to a third of the endangered mountain gorillas. These rare primates
live in the Parc National des Volcans. Lying in the Virunga Conservation area where Dian Fossey dedicated her life studying the beahaviour of mountain gorillas.
Parc national des Volcans is one of the 3 national parks where tracking of the endangered mountain gorillas can be carried out. Unlike humans whose total population is estimated to be in billions, there are only 720 mountain gorillas remaining in the montane forests of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. Therefore gorilla conservation is mandatory to the their survival and Rwanda is at the forefront of gorilla conservation. There are currently five gorilla families open for tracking to tourists in Rwanda. These are-Amahoro, Susa, Group 13, Sabyinyo and Umubano. Note that we are not considering the study groups.
Below is the recent statistics of the groups
TRACKING THE GORILLAS IN RWANDA
Allocating the gorilla permits is done by oRTPN. Upon your booking ORTPN (Office Rwandais du Tourisme et des Parcs Nationaux - Rwandan Office of Tourism and National Parks) will allocate a gorilla permit to you basing on the availability of gorilla permits in a particular group. Gorilla Permits are sold out on first come, first serve basis and therefore the earlier you make your booking, the better.
TREKKING THE GORILLAS IN RWANDA
Normaly trekking/sighting duration depends on where the gorillas are. During the rainy season, Gorillas come in the lower slopes and during the dry season, they tend to go higher up them slopes. So far I have not had a customer who was unable to trek any group.
