AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

The park is situated at a moderately low elevation on the border with Tanzania; Akagera National Park could barely be more diverse in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterize much of Rwanda. Dominated scenically by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of River Akagera, the most remote source of the Nile, this typical African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland speckled with open grassland.

There is plenty of game around, like buffalos, elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos and various antelope all reasonably visible.  The lakes support some of the highest concentrations of hippo you will not find anywhere in Africa, as well as numerous large crocodiles, while lion, leopard and black rhino are still in small numbers. There is bird life such as the fish eagle, water birds, papyrus gonolek, and the bizarre shoebill stork.
Akagera National Park is one Africa’s game reserve where you can drive for some hours without passing another vehicle, and without knowing what wildlife encounter you might find around the next corner.  Akagera is also among the most scenic of savanna reserves, with its sumptuous forest-fringed lakes, tall mountains and constantly changing vegetation.

 The tourist attractions in the park are as follows;

• Mitumba Hills
• Akagera River
• A large concentration of bird life over 525 species identified. Unique species such as Shoe billed stocks and papyrus gonolek can be encountered.  Endemics include the jacanas, ibis, sand pipers and herons.
• Akagera has a large mammal population.  Within Akagera are elephants, buffalos, lions, Maasai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Butchel’s zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard and bushbuck.
• Aquatic life e.g. Crocodiles and Hippos.
• Lakes: Ihema, Kivumba, Hago, Mihindi, Rwanyakizinga.
